This day in history: The birth of the Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers are infamous. It was on this day, 10-17-1835, that Texas approved a resolution to create the Texas Rangers. They were to be a corps of armed and mounted lawmen tasked to “range and guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers”.

The war with Mexico was won the following year in 1835. However, Texas decided to keep the Rangers for protection against both Indian and Mexican raiders and also to serve as the principal law enforcement authority along the sparsely populated Texan frontier.
