What is the Christian “Deliverance” process? A short summary

Even after I became a “Pastor” I used to think that “deliverance” involved a small group of people in a dark upstairs room huddled around a person in a chair as they scream threatening words to someone sitting in the middle of the group sobbing away.  I was wrong: Very wrong.

While there are some who errantly approach removing evil spirits in that way, that is certainly not the perfect picture of inner healing.

Jesus said He came to set the captives free.  Setting victims free from the grip of satan does involve the expulsion of evil spirits.  However freedom also includes healing of the soul and spirit along with other vital aspects of salvation (Sozo) .

The Spirit of Jehovah is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised…
Luke 4:18

It has been said that the expulsion of evil spirits from a person is usually about 48% preparation, 4% actually expelling the evil spirits and 48% follow – up.  I agree with this completely. Sometimes the order or exact numbers are changed a bit but the point is,  in regards to time, actually expelling an evil spirit from one of satan’s victims is often a very small part of the deliverance / healing process.

• The first part of the healing process involves helping the victim understand that they are a victim, that Jehovah God is God and that Jesus the Messiah has victory and dominion over every realm, even the dark side.
  
• Comparatively speaking, if things are done correctly, the actual expulsion of evil spirits usually proceeds very quickly.
• Finally the follow-up process is necessary to reenforce what was previously embraced while encouraging and supporting the victim to prevent the evil spirits from returning.

However it is important to note that this process could take minute, or it could take over a year, or even more.  In cases of ritual abuse it could take a number of years to work through the process

Often (but not always) by the time evil spirits are considered to be present, the victim has exhausted all other options they had available to them.  By then satan has wreaked havoc and there is much healing to be done.

Initially, healing often requires that the victim becomes (re)acquainted with and embrace the promises of God. And then (depending upon the severity of the attack) after the expulsion of the evil spirits it is necessary for the victim to continue on in the promises of God. Follow-up assistance is often necessary because many things will appear new as the victim now sees things unhindered, with almost an entirely new, heightened perspective.

This may sound like a lot and honestly, depending upon the situation, some times it is.  satan is a master at wreaking havoc in the lives of his victims.

However praise God; Jesus specializes in setting the captives free and restoring souls.  As dastardly as satan is, he can do nothing that Yeshua can’t fix and resotre to wholeness. The benefits are so very worth the effort.
