Nathan Hale Spy volunteered for George Washington's mission and was hung

This day in history… “A traitor among us”: Nathan Hale – Spy

It is good for us to remember that every American patriot and hero during the times leading up to and throughout the War for American Independence would have been considered a traitor to the government.

On September 10, 1776, George Washington asked for a volunteer to act as a spy.  Nathan Hale stepped up to the challenge of an intelligence-gathering mission in New York City. Unfortunately, the British captured and executed him. He is probably best known for his last words before being hanged:

“I only regret that I have but one life to give for my country.”

Nathan Hale

He has long been considered an American hero. In 1985, Nathan Hale was officially designated the state hero of Connecticut.
