Compromising: Going along to get along

Can you imagine Yeshua in a tavern with one arm around a woman he had just met and another holding a beer while telling jokes just so He didn’t offend His friends who had invited Him? Just the mere thought of it seems blasphemous.

To that, you might say “I” wouldn’t do THAT…..!

So to that, I would say, well what would you do? Would it seem more palatable to join someone at a Christ-mass party that is in direct violation of the Bible? Jeremiah 10?

Jeremiah 10:2-5
Thus says Yahweh, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.  For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.  They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.

Of course, along with that the wreaths, the songs, the colors, mistletoe… , winter solstice, it is all ungodly. It all has demonic, druidic roots.

Ok then, what about doing something innocent and neutral…?

OK, so your friends invite you to a theatre to watch a movie.

Going to a Christian movie in a theatre may not be quite as cut and dry.

If an unbeliever invites you to a movie theatre remember that the movie is certainly going to be unGodly. The Bible is VERY clear about only allowing Godly influence through your ear gate, your eye gate.

I don’t go to movie theatres but I am introducing the subject here just as food for thought because the Bible is very clear about compromise: God is done with it.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Even if it is a Christian film you might consider that while you are watching that movie you will be watching it on the exact same screen that X Rated movies are played on, and that you are supporting a pagan owned business (otherwise he wouldn’t be showing ungodly movies), and that he is only showing a Christian movie so that he can tap into a different market for additional revenue.

As disciples of the Messiah, we are called to align with Him: Not to simply “Do what Jesus would Do”, but to actually and literally be ONE with Him, united in spirit / Spirit.

To be clear, I am definitely NOT saying that you are to move off to the mountains and become a hermit so that you don’t ever have to come into contact with an unbeliever. Yeshua interacted with unbelievers regularly. But remember:

…to him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.

James 4:17

So let’s take a look at some Bible verses that directly address this issue.

Luke 7:34
“The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'”

1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.”

Act 26:16-18
(Yeshua speaking) Arise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;  17Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,  18To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

2 Corinthians 6:14, NLT:
“Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness?”

1 Corinthians 5:9-10, Paul addressed an issue of sin among the believers in the Corinthian church, saying, “I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.”

Proverbs 12:26
“One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.” Proverbs 13:20 adds, “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Proverbs 24:21
“My son, fear the LORD and the king, and do not join with those who do otherwise.”

“Denying” Yeshua is not restricted to verbally denouncing Him

Whosoever shall deny Me before men, him will I also deny before My Father which is in Heaven.

Matthew 10:33

In both the Greek language and the English word, to “deny” can also mean to withdraw or simply do nothing.

In conclusion:

Should God’s people fellowship with unbelievers? Part of the answer lies in the definition of the word fellowship.

The Bible sees fellowship as a close communion. So no: God’s people should not have close communion with unbelievers. Marriage relationships where one member comes to faith is a unique situation that requires further attention.
